Washboard Music Festival
What has become an annual event is the Washboard Music Festival where the percussion abilities of the washboard come to life in musical groups where it plays a backup and sometimes starring role. The festival takes place this year June 13-15 in Logan, Ohio.
The festivities begin on Thursday at 6 pm with Ohio’s music legend Arnett Howard and Friends coming back by popular demand. Other musical groups will perform on the main stage and other stages set up throughout the music festival. A complete schedule is on their website.
All the children's rides will be free. There will be food, additional children’s activities, parades and contests. And don’t forget a tour of the Columbus Washboard Company which is the only washboard factory in the United States.
The Columbus Washboard Company was founded in 1895 and nearly closed its doors in 1999 due to failing sales. A group of investors in Columbus and Logan purchased the Columbus based company and relocated it to the former 1920’s Godman Shoe Factory in downtown Logan, Ohio. Within the first six months the company was turning a profit even though most are turned to craft or musical purposes. Washboard laundry kits are provided for troops to wash their uniforms overseas.
American woman used the washboard as their primary laundry tool for many years until the invention or the modern washing machine. Tours of the washboard factory are available during the festival. They are located at 14 Gallagher Avenue. For more information see the website at: www.washboardmusicfestival.com
